Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Stachyurus praecox var. mitsuzakii 'Diane' (also seen as S. p. var. matsuzakii) - Pink-flowered Japanese variety of the elegant Catkin Tree with its beautiful dangling racemes in March and April. Racemes are four or so inches long studded with bell-like florets in pink, not the usual yellow to green-yellow or primrose yellow. It is very likely that it will grow taller than the 6-foot height iin good conditions that many nurseries claim. Plan for a larger presence in your landscape, one whose outline is somewhat vase-shaped. Lustrous green leaves up to seven inches long are possible metamorphosing to reds, oranges and possibly yellows in autumn. We wish we could grow these in northeastern Connecticut... alas. Given that our species would survive the toxic oil culture upon which we still depend it may be possible in another few decades. Politicians bribed by big money from corporations are yet controlling the breakthrough of non-oil based energy sources. So many species have been extinguished, Glaciers and the ice poles are melting at an alarming rate. Oceans are turning greener due to algae blooms from the constant flow of fresh water altering these vital habitats. (Dude – you're not helping your sales here...) Full sun to part shade in fertile ground on the acid side of the Ph spectrum. An organic soil which sustains moisture between rains. Established potted shrub from cutting.
