Ranzania japonica - Strong, fleshy stems erupt in spring with gusto. Lavender-pink blossoms bob and dangle from tall stems that arc at the tops. Flowers may arrive singly or in small clusters and they are beautiful. If you like the flowers of Anemonopsis you'll simply love those of Ranzania. If pollinated these will form white berries. The stem and leaf architecture of Ranzania, three per stem, resembles that of Epimedium both of which belong in Berberidaceae... allegedly; it has been bumped about and has also been considered once to be a member of the Podophyllum clan. Ranzania is a monotypic genus... plant it in your garden and it won't be so lonely. This is a choice, spreading perennial from Honshu, Japan. In sheltered locations this fine plant might be possible in USDA zone 4b. Plant in rich, moisture retaining soil in half shade. Add leaf mold to the soil. Morning sun is the better choice over afternoon. Established, potted Ranzania from division.
