Constantine Buttercup

Plant Type:

SUN PERENNIALS

Ranunculus constantinopolitanus 'Plenus' (syn. Ranunculus villosus var. constantinopolitanus) - Deeply lobed semi-glossed green leaves up to 4 inches wide are the foil for very large, fully double golden yellow pom poms with a cool green heart that flower successively for a long time. Flowering begins in April on average. Contrary to the thought bubble that just appeared over your head, "Ahh, the lowly Buttercup, self-sowing weed...". Ranunculus constantinopolitanus 'Plenus' is a clumping perennial and not at all invasive. Constantine Buttercup will capture your fancy... and if it doesn't it's time to have a serious conversation with yourself in front of the mirror confronting that snobby side that you attempt to hide from the general public - I do it several times each day in a tragic attempt at humility. It is certainly under-appreciated - not me, the buttercup. Hardiness calculations range wildly but we have it on good authority this is hardy through USDA zone 4 but even possibly into 3. We do not know the southern cut-off for the Constantine Buttercup, we're guessing 8. Buttercups are deer and rodent resistant; after all, they are aconites which make them not only distasteful, downright sickening and potentially poisonous. And once established and finally admired for the attributes they become resistant to the vagaries of gardeners! Average to gritty, moisture-retentive soil in about one half to fully sunny exposure. For gardeners towards the northern end of its range spring planting is advised... maybe. Established pot grown from division.
