Morella pennsylvanica 'Bobee'
Bayberry
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSMorella pennsylvanica 'Bobee' (form. Myrica pennsylvanica) – This is a selected female form with a smaller, mounding character. Glossy green leaves with the classic aroma of Bayberry when crushed speak of the multitude of summer days my old pal, Linda, and I spent on the narrow peninsula of beautiful beach known as Napatree Point in Rhode Island. The dunes were not only covered in dune grass, artemesia and rugosa roses but also low colonies of bayberry battered by the wind and dwarfed by the salted lack of nutrients in the sand in which they found foothold and tenacity. Nativity is along the band of coast from Newfoundland to North Carolina. Napatree Point is still a place for which I find cleansing, reflection and reverence. 'Bobee' must have a male pollinator for fruit. Best in full sun in fertile, draining soil. Established pot grown shrubs from division.
