Lonicera vesicaria DJH 123
Honeysuckle
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSLonicera vesicaria DJH 123 (ex: Hinkley) - This shrub honeysuckle is a restricted endemic from Kaibang-san mountain in eastern Korea collected by Dan Hinkley in 1993. Bright yellow clusters of terminal flowers bloom in late spring over clean leathery moderately hirsute deep green obovate foliage. Large quarter-inch and larger showy red translucent berries cluster at branch tips in autumn. The bark exfoliates becoming increasingly shaggy and interesting. A handsome shrub planted with variegated Miscanthus or perhaps golden-foliaged conifers. Our original plant came cutting grown from the original Heronswood Nursery in Washington State. However, we have had no success from cuttings so we have been growing this unusual shrub honeysuckle from seed. In an interesting side note some leaves on a small number of our seed-raised progeny display from 3 to 5 shallow indentations barely suggesting lobes. And, Dan, if you’re exploring the wilds of the internet and run across this… please give us a call to tell us how it is you managed to reproduce this Honeysuckle from cuttings! Also, with the reputation that some honeysuckles have for being weedy we can report that L. vesicaria has not set seed in the display gardens at Quackin’ Grass in the decade plus length of time it has been in the landscape. Site in full to half sun planted in any decent well-drained garden soil. Seed grown.
