Liatris microcephala - Dwarf Blazing Star rises on narrow rich green wands and display up and down the stems purple in late August well into September. Also known as Appalachian Blazing Star the purple flowers draw all manner of butterflies and bees. In our sloping stone garden wending around and between boulders Small Head Gayfeather, yet another common moniker, contrasts with Sedum 'Hab Gray', Sedum 'Purple Emperor', Dianthus and Eschscholzia californica, better known as California Poppy. All of these pitted against small and large prickly pears, Sedum acre, Sempervivum and Jovibarba. It's all very rich, satisfying and low maintenance. Hative to southern Appalachia. Full sun in well-drained, scrabbled and impoverished land. Established potted perennial from division.
