Iris x pseudata 'Yarai'
Iris
Plant Type:
POND & WETLAND PLANTSIris x pseudata 'Yarai' - Night Thunder Eye Shadow Iris. Dramatic some? Well YES! Short purple standards descend to the heart of the flower. Three broad petals (falls) extend from the base with a defined brght yellow eye ringed in a mascara of deep red-purple... maybe it's not Maybelline. The purple extends to a point at the central vein of each petal. The red-purple from all around the mascara ring extends countless fine veins of the same color dissecting the broadening, genuflecting pastel tan petals. From the capable hands of Hiroshi Shimizu come this elegant, sumptuous result from the simple breeding of two species, Iris ensata x pseudacorus. A colony of these planted in the garden or even at water's edge will create a memorable sight that will elate the spirit. It wouldn't take too long; this hybrid is crazy robust, a quick increaser with vibrant green sword leaves. Should be garnering more attention. Nearly to fully sunny planted in rich, moisture retaining ground. Established potted Iris from division.

Genus Overview: Iris
Common Name: Iris
From small woodland species and tiny forms happy in a sunny trough to those that stretch to one's waist and higher irises are among the most beautiful and unique of herbaceous perennials. They come in an amazing array of colors with fans of foliage that provide textural contrast to other garden denizens long after the flowers have passed. None that we carry are especially common. All are beautiful in the full sun border with many adaptable to pond's edge. They want a home! Pot grown division unless otherwise indicated.
