Allium cyatophorum subsp. farreri

Ornamental Onion

Plant Type:

ARID LAND PLANTS

Allium cyatophorum subsp. farreri – This is an oh so worthy yet uncommonly encountered species with deep dark violet-purple flowers in an outward to downward facing fan-shape at the crooked end or each stem like the neck of a sleeping crane. It flowers in late spring / summer. Though the flowers are not large, about five-eighths to three-quarter inches across, they are profuse and the color is striking. The green grassy foliage is very fine. A clumping species, it has been completely well-behaved in our stone border where it has increased its girth but has not seeded about. Allium cyatophorum subsp. farreri thrives in full sun and xeric conditions but is perfectly content in better soil. If ordered in autumn your Allium will arrive as dormant potted bulbs.

Genus Overview: Allium

The Ornamental Onions are a large group with many garden-worthy species. We’ve selected some that have performed well for us. Most require full to nearly full sun in most any average garden soil. The addition of lime is helpful in acid soils. All our Alliums are offered as pot-grown flowering-sized bulbs from our stock plants.
