Chrysanthemum weyrichii 'Apricot'
Weyrich Chrysanthemum
Plant Type:
SUN PERENNIALSChrysanthemum weyrichii 'Apricot'- Low-to-the-ground quickly forming rhizomatous carpet of densely set moderately hirsute mum leaves that support a cavalcade of three-inch light pink to apricot-pink daisies complete with the typical yellow button center. Foliage is dark green with a satin finish. The processional begins in the late season continuing deep into the autumn. Weyrich Chrysanthemum is a weed squelcher. Plant it front of the border or as and edger to foundation shrubs or in the larger garden where it can flood the ground green with an exuberant late season cresting foam of apricot-pink daisies. Let it wash around and among shrubs, tough and taller perennials or as a tide pool under smaller trees such as Japanese Maple. Let it be the tidal wave that drowns unwanted weeds. Refreshing. Mixed sun / shade in fertile to average ground that tends to retain moisture between rains. It will tolerate drier longer in more shade but too much shade may diminish its bloom. Established pot grown mum from division.
We strongly recommend spring planting in colder regions so that the plants will be well-established by the time cold weather arrives. Cut them back to a lower leaf axil by mid-July in the north, earlier farther south; doing so will result in better-branched plants on a more compact habit adorned with even more flowers at season’s end. But if you don’t, regardless, you’ll have multitudes of flowers on longer stems but possibly more decumbent plants. Plant all mums in full to part sun in fertile draining soil. Honeybees love them as this is one of the last flowering perennials to bloom in such abundance in the autumn in New England, along with some of the later asters.
