Amarine tubergenii 'Zwanenberg' (ex: Ellen Hornig) - The enormous brilliant pink dome of Nerine-like flowers looks as if this exceptional hybrid is on steroids. The splendid flowers radiate from the top of the fleshy stem erupting from the bulb with very much the look of the Amaryllis parent. This child from the cross between Nerine bowdenii and Amaryllis belladonna made in 1968 was raised and selected by Van Tubergen. Yes, hard to ignore the "Tuber" in Tubergen. 'Zwanenberg' blooms late season into the autumn here... of course, we keep ours in an old-fashioned terra cotta pot for added moisture dissemination which is important for all South African bulbs it seems... Drainage, drainage drainage! Foliage is a intermediate cross between the narrower straps of the Nerine parent and the broader belts of those of the Amaryllis. A knockout both in the garden or in the conservatory and greenhouse where landscape application is an anathema. They do not like disturbance, so treat gently and if / when transplanting is necessary do so just as the new season's growth begins to emerge from the top of the bulb... think Amaryllis. Even then set back is possible. However, this is a most worthy hybrid, a definite must for those who love this complex. And, of course, keep it drier in winter when dormant.
