Glaucidium palmatum

Japanese Woodland Poppy

Plant Type:

SHADE PERENNIALS

Glaucidium palmatum5 available. This is the Japanese Woodland Poppy which elicits much comment when in bloom at Quackin’ Grass. Large 4-petaled lavender purple flowers 3” tall and wide with a yellow boss of central stamens bloom here in late May though we've had some flower at the very start of the month. It is glorious. The large, cupped and decidedly diamond-shaped blossoms are studded among the dome of bold palmate green leaves which remain looking good throughout the growing season. Late season seedpods are curious – like enormous paired maple samaras on steroids but without the wings! Imported. Plant in fertile woodland conditions in dappled to open shade. Early morning or very late day sun is okay but remember: this is a woodland denizen. In the north spring planting is strongly recommended. Propagated by seed or division.
