Edgeworthia chrysantha

Oriental Paper Plant

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Edgeworthia chrysantha – 6 available. Oriental Paper Plant is a fascinating daphne relative. A customer of ours who is a daphne freak (I mean that in a completely complementary vernacular usage) has this plant growing happily in a sheltered spot in Montville, Connecticut. She lives in USDA zone 6; the shrub is probably in a 7a micro-climate and is thriving. Its large fragrant flowers cream-white floret harbor a beautiful bright golden yellow center - a fresh, bright tint. Quick growing Mitsumata, another common moniker, flowers early in the season with large, showy, rounded downward-facing clusters of flowers set like rounded Chinese lanterns on the dark brown stems. Medium matte-finish green tongues of leaves erupt soon after cloaking the shrub. Edgeworthia chrysantha looks clean and green all through the growing season with the leaves possibly achieving some yellow tones in the fall. If this occurs think of it as a bonus. The form of the shrub is rather like a round-crowned dome. Very attractive. Next year's flowers are held in silvery buds which are handsomely set on the smooth dark brown stems in winter. This is a neat shrub tending to be easier in garden culture than many of the daphnes. Edgeworthia chrysantha should be planted more. Check it out! Full sun in fertile, draining soil. Cutting grown.
