Allium angulosum 'Summer Beauty'
Plant Type:
SUN PERENNIALSAllium angulosum 'Summer Beauty' – This is a large flowering midsummer bloomer with 1.5 to 2 inch bright lavender globes atop tall, strong wiry stems, and lots of 'em. Unlike A. senescens, A. angulosum 'Summer Beauty' is sterile; therefore, it will not reseed with the sometimes reckless abandon of A. senescens. However, the clump sizes-up readily and it won't take too long to achieve a nice patch with lots of flowers that attract bees and butterflies. The foliage comprised of glossy deep green straps looks great all season. Leaves often pick up yellow coloration in the fall while the flowering stems acquire reddish tones. Roy Diblik of Northwind Perennial Farm in Wisconsin uses this lovely ornamental onion to great effect with Amsonia, Nepeta, Salvia nemerosa, various grasses and Stachys officinalis 'Hummello' planted in the naturalistic sweeps for which he is acclaimed. We also like it with Penstemon digitalis 'Husker's Red', growing through ground covering Sedum and with the many composite flowers which occur in the midsummer period. It is splendid perched above white, buttermilk or the pinkish color forms of California Poppy, Eschscholzia californica. Site 'Summer Beauty' in full to part sun planted in any soil that drains well. If ordered in autumn your Allium will arrive as dormant potted bulbs.
From Donna C. (IA) on 10.7.2013 - Dear Wayne; I received my shipment of Summer Beauty Alliums last week and immediately got them set out. They were in wonderful condition and I hope they like Iowa weather. I appreciate your help and it was so nice to do business with you. Have a good year. Thanks Donna C.

Genus Overview: Allium
The Ornamental Onions are a large group with many garden-worthy species. We’ve selected some that have performed well for us. Most require full to nearly full sun in most any average garden soil. The addition of lime is helpful in acid soils. All our Alliums are offered as pot-grown flowering-sized bulbs from our stock plants.
