Primula x 'Redfield Hybrid'

Plant Type:

Primula x 'Redfield Hybrid' - Rich, deep red-purple flowers set in whorls in candelabra form on strong stems for a long period in spring. Light green lettuce-like basal leaves in a coarse rosette remain close to the ground. This is a naturally occurring hybrid with one of the parents being P. japonica. It occurred in wet woodland part of Dick Redfield's Scotland, Connecticut garden near the running brook - as hauntingly beautiful as naturalistic in that setting. This worthy Primrose is tough, easy-going and exhibits hybrid vigor. 'Redfield Hybrid' is attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds and, fortunately, deer and rabbit resistant. Plant this stunner in irregular drifts with white Shooting Stars (Dodecatheon meadia) for an eye-popping pairing on fertile, moist ground set in open to partial shade. 'Redfield Hybrid' is hardy at least through USDA zone 5 but perhaps into 4b (-25F) in a sheltered spot. In 2018 we had some individuals that approached 30 inches. If purchased in our fall shipping window 'Redfield Hybrid' will likely arrive cut back, the later the delivery the more likely. Seed grown.
