Japahese Stewartia

Plant Type:

Stewartia pseudocamellia - Beautiful Japanese Stewartia grows slowly into an upright oval to pyramidal tree. Handsome leaves turn glorious red in autumn when sited in full sun. One of our specimens sited in shade in some falls the outer leaves turned dusky purple as the interior foliage had turned light yellow. In the late day when the sun shone on the tree the interior leaves lit up as the tree glowed from within stunning even the most jaded of plant people! White showy summer bowls up to 2.5 inches across are like single camellia flowers with golden yellow and white silky anthers occur in July beginning their three week reign as the tree lilacs are beginning to fade. The bark - well, as it ages it becomes smooth like marble with irregular patches - some larger, some smaller - in a mix of colors ranging from ivory-gray and silvery-pewter to light brown, medium brown, putty and nickel. The wood becomes increasingly muscled and the bark coloration just gets better and better through the years. This is truly a great four-season tree with no pest problems and it's not messy either... It almost never happens but we can find nothing amiss with Japanese Stewartia. Site in full sun to part shade in fertile, draining soil. For gardeners towards the northern end of its range spring planting is advised. Seed grown.
