Xanthorhiza simplicissima

Yellowroot

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Xanthorhiza simplicissima – This is Yellowroot, a member of the Ranunculaceae. Dusky purple-brown sprays of star-shaped flowers in early spring are followed by light green celery-like foliage complete with the serrations. Autumn color is gold mixed with copper-orange and dark purple zones in some years, very attractive. Yellowroot spreads into a very pretty and desirable ground cover sited in full to three-quarters shade planted in fertile moisture retaining soils. Its usual habitat is along stream banks and moist spots but it can tolerate adverse clay conditions and is somewhat drought tolerant once established. Certainly it will spread more slowly in drier ground but this is a plant that wants to colonize. Established potted Yellowroot from division.
