Hydrangea paniculata 'Phantom'

Panicle Hydrangea

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Hydrangea paniculata 'Phantom' - Huge rounded panicles and lots of them on a globe-shaped to upright mounded shrub with an extended bloom period. Pure white clouds of flowers of mostly sterile florets can begin the season as early as late June / July and shade to rose pink in September and October. It's wonderful. Flower heads eventually turn brown and tend to remain on the shrub through the winter providing modest interest during the coldest part of the year. And after extensive trials RHS deems 'Phantom' a better option over 'Grandiflora'. As this plant flowers on new wood you may prune down in late winter before new growth emerges. The possibility exists that with an annual pruning you will achieve even more numerous flower heads than one left to its own devices... but even if left alone this shrub will delight. Part to full sun in fertile soil that holds onto some moisture between rains. The species hales from China; 'Phantom' is, of course, of garden origin. Hydrangea paniculata in all of its renditions flowers on new wood and can be pruned in late winter if and when necessary. Established, potted cutting grown shrub.

Genus Overview: Hydrangea paniculata

Common Name: Panicle Hydrangea

Hydrangea paniculata. The Panicle Hydrangea is an easy, tough shrub. Blooming on new wood in the mid/late season garden for many weeks on end it exhibits fair drought tolerance once it settles into the landscape. Large cone-shaped white flowers become infused with rose pink as they age. They will turn brown in autumn and as in the case of 'Nana' hang on through the winter for an extra season on interest. Site in full to half sun planted in any good garden soil that drains. All we sell are established shrubs from cuttings. All are a manageable size to easily get them settled into your landscape. The specie's native range is China and Japan.
