Forsythia x intermedia 'Gold Tide' - A plant created with man-in-the-moon gamma rays in France this is about as Frankensteinian as ya get. But the result is wonderful. A wider than tall Forsythia with light yellow early spring blossoms. Though the height is designated as 12 to 24 inches this fine low grower may acheive a height of 3 feet; but that's an outside dimension as 'Gold Tide' will likely remain shorter. Wonderful front of the larger border. Set before taller shrubs - the shrubs set before trees will provide three satisfying tiers in naturalistic appeal. 'Gold Tide' on a bank in flower would look like molten butter (thank you, Ray Bradbury.) Best in full to nearly full sun planted in fertile, draining ground. Established potted Forsythia from cutting.

Genus Overview: Forsythia

Forsythia. We're not big fans of Forsythia in that they flower gloriously for a few weeks but then settle into undistinguished, tousled and boring summer torpor. Winter isn't much better with wild-haired yellowish stems displaying little character. Having said that we do like the variegated, golden-foliaged and dwarf forms; the golden or variegated forms can make good background or contrast with perennials and other shrubs all through the growing season; the dwarf forms, like 'Bronxensis' make great filler and foreground shrubs and also actually display decent autumn leaf color.
