Viola odorata ssp. sulfurea - A very pretty Sweet Violet with apricot flowers emitting modest fragrance. Typical of the species this violet flowers in early to mid spring though in some regions it may surprise with flowers again in autumn. However, this may actually be a distinct species unto itself. Despite heady taxonomic classification it is a simple charmer. Plant it at the edge of the garden. Plant it in the lawn where it will make a small colony in just a few years. It's a good honey bee plant. Easy to please Viola odorata ssp. sulfurea will be happy in modest to fertile soil; really any soil that holds on to moisture between rains, just avoid wet or swampy ground. Exposure is morning sun to dappled light or open shade in the afternoon. Consider more afternoon shade in hotter parts of the country, more sun will be fine in the north.
