Saxifraga stolonifera 'Harvest Moon'

Strawberry Begonia

Plant Type:

SHADE PERENNIALS

Saxifraga stolonifera 'Harvest Moon' - A beautiful form with handsome yellow leaves about the size of a 25-cent piece and up to 50-cent coin, broadly scalloped and with red undersides. The golden-leafed form of the Strawberry Begonia (another horrid common name as this is neither strawberry nor begonia) glows in the open to part sun exposure S. stolonifera prefers. The white to pink flowers can rise to 18 inches and are a complex constellation - an airy candelabra as seen in a kaleidoscope (yes, a bizarre metaphor - what did you expect?!). Let it spread and wander among other companion perennials and shrubs; doubtful you will be sorry. And in warmer climes it is a virtual evergreen. Some morning sun, dappled light is fine avoid harsh afternoon rays. Some sun will enrich the golden leaf color; in more shade the leaves will become nearer to chartreuse. 'Harvest Moon' will revel in moist, rich soil but will tolerate average ground. Established, potted Saxifrage from division.
