Rohdea japonica ''mini''

Sacred Lily

Plant Type:

SHADE PERENNIALS

Rohdea japonica "mini" (ex: Jonathan Lehrer) - A pygmy form with all dark green leaves limned with a fine cream margin. Some leaves may also occasionally streak with white. "Mini" will be nice in a pot as well as in the garden. Flowers are like squat, fat little corn cobs composed of tightly clustered light yellow-green florets. They open to reveal anthers, the edges of the orifice like little teeth surrounding the central pistil. Pollinated florets develop clustered red “berries” loosely resembling the fruiting inflorescence of Jack-in-the-Pulpit. Site in fertile to draining woodland soils. All Sacred Lilies are tolerant of dry summer soil. Plant this pygmy form in shade. As we expect that demand will outpace inventory please order early – it is likely we will ever have but few available and perhaps not in every year. Spring planting is strongly advised in the northern range. "Mini" will clump with slow increase. "Mini" is doubtless an incorrect name applied when the original moniker was lost. Whatever the correct designation this choice little Rohdea is apparently rare in the trade, a collector plant to be sure. Open to dappled shade in fertile soil. Shelter at the northern fringes. Established pot grown perennial from division.
