Iris aphylla

Bohemian Iris

Plant Type:

SUN PERENNIALS

Iris aphylla - Showy violet purple irises top strong scapes and rising above handsome fans comprised of green to gray-green swords. This fine species contributed to the gene pool of our contemporary array of modern bearded irises. It is still called upon by some breeders when attempting shorter growing garden irises. Commonly called the Bohemian Iris, Table Iris and Stool Iris (having I suppose to do with stools or stooling and not stool) it also has botanical pseudonyms, Iris hungarica, Iris polonica, Iris furcata and Iris duerinckii. Okay okay enough already of the common names. Its nativity includes a broad swath which includes Russia and Azerbaijan, south to Albania, east through Eastern and Western Europe including Germany, Italy and France. Fertile, draining ground in plenty of sun. Established Iris from division.

Genus Overview: Iris

Common Name: Iris

From small woodland species and tiny forms happy in a sunny trough to those that stretch to one's waist and higher irises are among the most beautiful and unique of herbaceous perennials. They come in an amazing array of colors with fans of foliage that provide textural contrast to other garden denizens long after the flowers have passed. None that we carry are especially common. All are beautiful in the full sun border with many adaptable to pond's edge. They want a home! Pot grown division unless otherwise indicated.
