Rhododendron fastigiatum - A sweet little lepidote rhodie with purple flowers and evergreen needle-like foliage. Leaves are reminiscent of Bog Rosemary (Andromeda spp.), glaucous and green touched with blue. Silvery green buds set up at the tips of branches by late season and through the winter offer the promise of a new, warmer season to come. Funnel flowers open on purple to rose-purple cluster. This fine dwarf is perfect for the rock garden or limning a foundation garden. This comely rhododendron will want bony and well-drained soil in plenty of sun. Add some organic matter mixed with peat and sand. Towards the southern end of its range some afternoon shade would be a wise consideration. Additional water during extended dry spells will be important to include in a maintenance plan.
