Ilex aquifolium 'Ron's Variegated'

Holly

Plant Type:

BROADLEAF EVERGREEN SHRUBS

Ilex aquifolium 'Ron's Variegated' - An uncommon variegated Holly. All evergreen leaves are heavily speckled in creamy white with the cream-white concentrating towards the leaf edges making each leaf virtually white-margined. Central parts of leaves are greener. A shrub looks snow-dusted. New stems are dark red in beautiful contrast to all leaves. New leaves display an infusion of red-violet aging pink. From axillary clustered pink buds come fragrant white flowers. 'Ron's Variegated' is just great in the foundation or the mixed shrub border when companions are purple-leaved or solid green and in the case of conifers, blue. Best in fully to mostly sunny sites in fertile, draining soil. Prune judiciously for shaping (or not!) as this is a plant that will grow long, odd stems that can mar the overall aesthetic balance; but perhaps in aesthetic context with other plants pruning may be deemed unnecessary. 'Ron's Variegated' could be employed for bonsai. With careful pruning and stem training it could be exceptionally beautiful. Established potted shrub grown from cutting.
