Leucothoe axillaris

Coast Leucothoe

Plant Type:

BROADLEAF EVERGREEN SHRUBS

Leucothoe axillaris – Dog Hobble? Really??? Another common name rife with insults for both canines and Leucothoe! Regardless, this is a great less commonly offered Leucothoe slowly growing only 2 to perhaps as much as 4 feet by about 3 to 6 feet wide. Also known as Coast Leucothoe (that's better!), in full open shade planted in moderately good, acid Ph soil it develops lustrous very deep, dark green narrow pointed leathery blades (...enough adjectives, Wayne??) alternately set on zig-zagging green stems. White axillary flowers are pretty – fewer in number than L. fontenesiana.. It's been just plain beautiful for us with no disease issues turning bronze-red-purple in autumn. Highly recommended. Contrary to many who designate Coast Leucothoe as hardy only to USDA zone 6 it is hardy in zone 5 proving its muster in northeastern Connecticut. Nativity is Virginia to Florida. A worthy shade plant. Cutting grown.
