Little Bluestem

Plant Type:

GRASSES & GRASS-LIKE PLANTS

Schizachyrium scoparium 'The Blues' - This is a selected Little Bluestem. 'The Blues' is another very nice late season grass with the potential of long winter interest. Very vertical stems arise with much blue in them along with some red and/or pink in accompaniment. The late season inflorescence is tufted and held above all foliage. Foliage dries to a pleasing pink to straw color and usually stands erect all winter long. We see wild natives having taken hold on roadside slopes where it maintains vertical posture all through the winter. A full sun grass Schizachyrium scoparium 'The Blues' relishes very well-drained, infertile sandy media in full, blazing sun. Native to nearly all of North America if happy Little Bluestem will gently self-sow. If very happy it may achieve a taller stance however this may imply conditions that are too rich which may result in floppy posture. Established pot grown plant from division.
