It's a big purple with a shocking white signal, a very sharp and well-defined garden flower. And the leaves are striking the entire season.

Iris laevigata 'Variegata'

Rabbit-ear Iris

Plant Type:

GRASSES & GRASS-LIKE PLANTS

Iris laevigata 'Variegata' - The variegated Rabbit-ear Iris shows off beautiful blue-purple iris flowers, with 3 casually pendent falls, each sporting a showy silver-white signal, gracing the smaller standards. Spring flowering, it may bloom into early summer in the north. Extending its interest beyond the flowering even are the gorgeous fans of flattened blades, dark green with generous, broad white stripe in each leaf. Yet another great feature is that Iris laevigata 'Variegata' is virtually evergreen in its more southern haunts. This species seems to be lesser known yet its beauty demands more attention. Site in full sun planted in moist to wet fertile soil - nice at the edge of a pond. Lime-tolerant. Division.

Genus Overview: Iris

Common Name: Iris

From small woodland species and tiny forms happy in a sunny trough to those that stretch to one's waist and higher irises are among the most beautiful and unique of herbaceous perennials. They come in an amazing array of colors with fans of foliage that provide textural contrast to other garden denizens long after the flowers have passed. None that we carry are especially common. All are beautiful in the full sun border with many adaptable to pond's edge. They want a home! Pot grown division unless otherwise indicated.
