Asarum europaeum
European Ginger
Plant Type:
SHADE PERENNIALSAsarum europaeum – Gorgeous glossy rounds of leaves form an elegant, aristocratic ground cover in fertile, moisture-retentive soil planted in open to part shade, best in a cool spot out of blazing afternoon sun. European Wild Ginger is green for us to the winter solstice; only when temperatures become more severe does it disappear only to emerge fresh, green and clean when spring arrives again. Its purple-brown flowers are seen by the woodland fairies more than humans unless one among the daylight denizens takes the time to lift the foliage in early spring to appreciate their odd appeal. Humus-rich and moisture retaining soil in some morning or dappled sun to full shade. These could be considered a "landscaper special" as they are in big 2-quart pots... a bargain, really. Pot grown division(s).
