Waldsteina ternata 'Lichtermeer' – ​This is just the most beautiful and aristocratic ground covering perennial! It is typical in every way to the straight green-leaved Barren Strawberry species except the deep green semi-glossy leaves are streaked and splashed with variable creamy variegation. Please be forewarned: In the garden it can and does revert making this much more of a collector plant. This will light up as the star it is in dappled to open shade gradually spreading out into a mat. The variegated portions pick up pink to red tones as temperatures cool. A mat-forming plant, 'Lichtermeer' will grow usually about 2" high to as many as 4". Yellow flowers which arise in April in northeastern Connecticut do, indeed, resemble strawberry flowers (though Fragaria spp. blooms are usually white with some pink flowering selections now also available.) Flowering stems may rise to 6". Waldsteinia ternata remains evergreen here until harsh Arctic temperatures burn the foliage in January. During milder winters here and certainly farther south this plant does and will remain evergreen. Pot grown by division or cutting.
