Vernonia noveboracensis – This is New York Ironweed. Mid to late summer purple flying carpets atop strong stems, Vernonia noveboracensis, in the Asteraceae is another good bee / butterfly plant for the late season garden. V. noveboracensis in look and stature is interchangeable with V. fasciculata, its less well-known close cousin. New York Ironweed blooms earlier but overlaps with the Giant Ironweed, V. gigantea. Ironweed are beautiful with Goldenrod, the Joe-pye Weeds, Milkweeds, taller warm season grasses and even Butterfly Bushes... really in almost any pasture or semi-wild garden situation when planted in average to fertile soils which retain some moisture between summer rains. Established pot grown perennial from cutting or division.
