Rosa moyesii
Moyes Rose
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSRosa moyesii - Beautiful open bowls of single coral-red-orange roses prolifically adorn this large grower in late spring or early summer. The center of each 2-inch rose flower is the accent of a boss of golden yellow stamens with a bright yellow heart, its pistil. Spectacular, showy and relatively large down-turned red rose hips in the shape of urns follow for another season of interest. A possible faint sweet scent is detectable in some selections though others emit none at all. E.H. Wilson discovered the Moyes Rose in western China and introduced it in the U.S. circa 1908. Growing from 6 to 15 feet tall it may average about 8 feet tall. Pruning out older stems will help to keep it in check if 15 feet is beyond acceptable height in your scheme. Also known as the Mandarin Rose full to mostly sunny siting planted in fertile, draining soil with a neutral to slightly acid Ph will satisfy. This species exhibits good disease resistance though some black spot on the lustrous, dark green foliage in a damp summer is likely. New wood tends to be chocolate-purple. Established starter shrub grown from cutting.
