Podophyllum versipelle

Chinese Mayapple

Plant Type:

SHADE PERENNIALS

Podophyllum versipelle - The Chinese Mayapple produces peltate glossy leaves, large and lobed. The leaves might be confused with a tropical but this species is quite hardy. In spring clusters of deep maroon-red flowers dangle from pedicels below a leaf, sometimes at a crotch where the stems of two leaves conjoin. They are striking. The flowers are undeniably fascinating and darkly beautiful. They are followed by "olives" which change from matte-finished green to red at maturity. Podophyllum versipelle is clumping, not running though if happy in time will expand into a respectable colony. Open shade to morning sun in fertile, moisture retentive soil. Established Chinese Mayapple from division.
