Podophyllum peltatum

Mayapple

Plant Type:

SHADE PERENNIALS

Podophyllum peltatum – Mayapple makes beautiful bowl-shaped pristine white flowers between 1 and 2 inches diameter. These occur on short stems where the two bold, peltate leaves meet at the crotch of the main stem. Pale ivory-yellow egg-shaped mayapples set up thereafter growing between 2 and 3 inches long. These can be made into a very nice jelly. This, as with other early blooming woodland plants dies down to dormancy by middle to middle-late summer. A quick growing naturalizer Mayapple is perfect at the edge of the woodland, on a slope, before a stone wall planted over daffodils or wherever a torridly quick ground covering perennial is desired. But don't place it with other perennials that might be swamped by the tsunami that this fierce grower is. Plant in fertile woodland conditions sited in morning sun, dappled to open shade. Pot grown Division.
