Phytolacca americana 'Silberstein'
Variegated Pokeweed
Plant Type:
SUN PERENNIALSPhytolacca americana ‘Silberstein’ – This is the amazing variegated Pokeweed. Yes… many just think of Pokeweed as a weed. Just as jazz had to be exported to Europe before it found widespread acceptance here in the U.S. have you considered that every good garden plant began its journey being looked down upon as a lowly weed?! Much creamy variegation lights each leaf. This perennial is large enough to take on an almost shrub-like affect. The starry white flowers are attractive on a hot dog shaped inflorescence. The autumn fruits are dark purple on richly colored violet pink stems – just stunning against the variegated leaves. This is a great plant! A large percentage of seedlings display the variegated leaves of the parent. We select only the most variegated plantlets. Our original plant came from Ellen Hornig of the now sadly defunct Seneca Hill Perennials. We grew it for a year in a container... planted it in the open garden where it was, but for the crown of the plant, immediately eaten by voles. Of course, the voles don't eat the green pokeweeds. Arghhhh!!! We plucked it from the ground, re-potted it, grew it out for another year and planted it in a cage. All parts of Phytolacca americana are poisonous though the youngest emerging and tender shoots are purportedly edible. Don’t eat the attractive fruit... just don't do it! If ordered in our Autumn shipping window 'Silberstein' will be cut back ready for winter's bed. Seed grown.
