Petasites japonicus ‘Variegatus’ (ex: Hinkley) –​ Petasites japonicus ‘Variegatus’ is the striking dwarf variegated form of Butterbur. Very early spring flowers like weird Martian chartreuse cabbages emerge rising 4 to 12 inches above the ground. The foliage soon follows. Much shorter growing than P. giganteum which can reach about 6’ in height P. j. ‘Variegatus’ grows only between 2’ and perhaps up to 3’ tall. Each leaf develops with irregular gold markings against the green, the yellow gradually turning creamy white as the foliage matures. The handsome leaves are round, peltate averaging between 8” and 9” diameter but may grow wider. This is a very exuberant ground covering plant; as such, site it carefully in dappled to open shade or morning sun planted in moisture retaining soil. We have heard that this plant will languish in the heat of the south. Established potted Butterbur propagated by division.
