Ratstripper

Plant Type:

BROADLEAF EVERGREEN SHRUBS

Paxistima canbyi - From the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia comes this fantastic evergreen ground cover. Narrow, semi-glossed dark green ellipses of leaves cover the stems on a low, mounding shrub that slowly, gradually increases its domain. Common names are Cliff Green (didn't I go to high school with him?), Mountain Lover (isn't that a blue grass tune??) and Rat-stripper (okay, okay - I got nuthin'). Where the moniker Rat-stripper came from no one seems to know but it's one of the wildest common names yet! Maybe Rat-stripper is a super hero who in the cover of night nabs the unwholesome: "You dirty rats..." stripping these ne'er-do-wells from the ugly underbelly of a law-abiding society. ...That was a tragic stretch. Like I said: I got nuthin'. The form we are offering may possibly be 'Nana'... a dwarf super hero. Okay, okay - I'm shutting up now... Dappled to open shade in constantly moist, friable soil that drains well... add some sand and small stone. In the wild it's usually found on calcareous soil so adding lime could very well be beneficial. Cutting grown.
