TREES

Parrotia persica – This is the Persian Parrotia or Persian Ironwood. Oblong leaves reminiscent of Hamamelis cloak younger gray bark; indeed, the Persian Parrotia is a member of the Hamamelidaceae. Older wood becomes better and better: quite beautiful, increasingly flecked in small patches colored rich, deep dark brown, grayish-white and olive green. Autumn foliage may be gold, red, orange and any combination of the three sometimes touched with dark purple. We have seldom seen good fall color perhaps due to the way the sugars set up in this latitude. In late winter down south to early spring in the north interesting rich, deep but bright crimson stamens burst from the very dark brown pea-like buds becoming dusted with yellow pollen. Though small, the flowers are a gorgeous deep rich shade and numerous on older trees making for an extra season of interest, a constellation of dark stars. Site in full sun planted in draining slightly acid fertile soils. Cutting grown.
