Morus alba 'Unryu'

Contorted White Mulberry

Plant Type:

Morus alba 'Unryu' (syn. M. bombycis 'Unryu', M. alba 'Toruosa') - 2 available. Spectacular Contorted White Mulberry will form a large, broad spreading tree or, even more amazing, a huge multi-stemmed broad shrub looking every bit like Medusa. To achieve an amazing Medusa in your landscape just cut the trunk(s) down and watch it roil out of the ground in multiples. (There's a specimen at Arnold Arboretum that will knock your socks off if you don't get turned to stone first.) If cut back you can keep this stunner much shorter but wider. Unryu means "twisted" in Japanese and in a more poetic translation "dragon in the clouds". Zig zagging stems are covered in attractive, light brown bark. Glossy green leaves may (or may not!) turn yellow in Autumn before leaf drop. Red to red-purple fruits can be eaten... if not by you then all manner of four-legged and/or feathered creature. Plant in rich, moist soil in full sun or close to it. Though perfectly happy at the Arnold Arboretum (zone 6) we here in USDA zone 5b had trouble establishing it. Established potted Mulberry, cutting grown.
