Iris cristata 'Eco Orchid Giant'
Crested Iris
Plant Type:
SHADE PERENNIALSIris cristata 'Eco Orchid Giant' – This Don Jacobs selection is a large grower for a Crested Iris growing as tall as 8 inches, possibly taller. Spring iris flowers are a pretty lavender-purple complete with gold fringe. Small enough for the shaded to part sun rock garden but perfect for front of the border in a woodland scheme this little beauty holds its handsome fans of blades for the remainder of the growing season. As with many Iris the rhizomes should be planted at ground level or slightly higher than the surrounding terrain - they love scrambling through the duff or slightly below it. If planted deep they will likely languish and rot. If planted deep they will likely languish and rot. 'Eco Orchid Giant' is a clumping perennial with moderate increase and will gradually colonize. Morning sun and afternoon shade, dappled light or a bright, open shade planted in fertile, draining soil... you know, woodland condtiitions! We're uncertain as to exactly where 'Eco Orchid Giant' was selected but the speices hales from Eastern North America. For gardeners towards the northern end of its range spring planting is advised. Established potted Iris from division.

Genus Overview: Iris
Common Name: Iris
From small woodland species and tiny forms happy in a sunny trough to those that stretch to one's waist and higher irises are among the most beautiful and unique of herbaceous perennials. They come in an amazing array of colors with fans of foliage that provide textural contrast to other garden denizens long after the flowers have passed. None that we carry are especially common. All are beautiful in the full sun border with many adaptable to pond's edge. They want a home! Pot grown division unless otherwise indicated.
