Hydrangea luteovenosa 'Aureo-variegata'
Sweet Hydrangea
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSHydrangea luteovenosa 'Aureo-variegata' (syn. Hydrangea scandens 'Fragrant Splash'?) – This interesting and seldom encountered hydrangea apparently originally came via the capable hands of the astute Dan Hinkley. It is genuinely rare in this country. The Variegated Sweet Hydrangea is cloaked in small leaves which sport very noticeable irregular golden splashes that fade to cream-white with maturity. When temperatures cool and purple flush envelops the foliage with lighter pink-purple in the variegated zones – very handsome. Also, there can be a bronze-purple self protecting flush that develops in sun which underscores the variegation in a most beautiful way. An especially lovely bonus is that its early white spring lace cap flowers are actually fragrant. Nice! For gardeners towards the northern end of its range spring planting is advised. Established cutting grown in pots.
