Hierochloe odorata - ​Sweet Grass is a fast growing emerald green colonizer in the Poaceae with attractive spring silvery green-white inflorescences. Its main claim to fame is that when bruised fresh or dried it emits a wonderful, heady fragrance - not so sweet as reminiscent of quintessential summer. It is the compound called coumarin whose scent is not so sweet as reminiscent of an exceptional quintessential, warm, heroic afternoon in high summer. Sweet Grass has been utilized extensively by many tribes for many different reasons including medicinal applications and vanity. One of the more fascinating uses that many Amerindian tribes employed was to dry and methodically braid strands into large, stout wicks. These were "smudged" prior to ceremonies - the grass tends to smolder and not burn sending off a wonderfully scented smoke. The smoke was believed to draw good spirits to an area prior to ceremonial commencement. Site in full to part sun planted in fertile, draining soil. Sweet Grass also goes by Holy Grass, Buffalo Grass, Bison Grass, Vanilla Grass, Blue Joint among others. Hierochloe odorata has extension distribution as it is circumboreal.
