'Mohawk Honey' upon opening

Hemerocallis 'Mohawk Honey' (Davis) – Look: there are a plethora of yellow daylilies available but then there are YELLOW daylilies. 'Mohawk Honey' is truly exceptional. Incredible deep, saturated yellow memorializes the nostalgia of the butter color on old-fashioned movie house popcorn. The rich shade pops and demands attention in the July garden. The color is so rich and intense yet still manages to be bright. Though the flower opens with just a touch of lime green at the heart as petals stretch and the blossom attains its 6-plus inch full size by midday the green fades and there is no other color apparent; from the heart to the petal tips, even the anthers are the very same shade. On hot afternoons the barest infusion of peach in the yellow may appear on the three sepals. It is only ascertained on very close inspection; it may not appear at all and is hardly worth mentioning. Midribs on close inspection exhibit a slight lighter color but standing but a few feet away it is not noticeable. Monochrome, a beckoning beauty, 'Mohawk Honey' is also a good increaser with a good bud count. This is the only daylily we have from the late Shirley Davis, our local daylily expert who through the years bred approximately 24 cultivars she felt worthy of a name. She always felt lukewarm about her efforts and reticent may have underestimated her abilities. Then again there are a ridiculous number of cultivars out there already, a fact of which she was not unaware. Unfortunately, she is no longer with us. And also unfortunate for all of us is that before Shirley was able to follow through with the verbal agreement that we forged that would open the way for Quackin' Grass to introduce and offer her collection to a larger audience she quickly succumbed to a virulent cancer. We miss you Shirley. Though we fear it will come to pass we hope that your collection will not be lost. xxx
