Hamamelis virginiana 'Mohonk Red'
Eastern Witch Hazel
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSHamamelis virginiana 'Mohonk Red' - Yes, an Eastern Witch Hazel with red flowers. The autumn flowers are not large nor are they screaming shade of a fire engine; rather the tone is a gentle waxy red with each petal tipped in yellow. The red flowers certainly contrast the butter yellow fall leaf color handsomely. It's really quite lovely and certainly unusual. After years of reports of such a color variant the search for the "Yeti" by Paul Huth, a ranger in Mohonk Nature Preserve in Gardiner near New Paltz, New York, finally wrangled it into captivity. It is a fine addition to the autumn garden palette. Fertile soil in plenty of sun will result a denser shrub with more flowers. The bark is light colored, almost a white-gold tint that reflects winter light. I wouldn't say it has "killer" winter interest but it is certainly not unattractive either! Though it is more likely that this lovely shrub will top off at about 15 feet it is certainly possible that it may grow taller over time. Most of these guys are grafted. To avoid the suckering issue from grafting to rootstock we attempt to produce these from cuttings - sometimes with limited to moderate success but in some years we fail miserably. Established potted shrub, cutting grown.
