Fargesia nitida "new generation plants - seed grown"

Blue Foundain Bamboo

Plant Type:

GRASSES & GRASS-LIKE PLANTS

Fargesia nitida “unnamed new generation seedlings” – Many of the wonderful cultivars of F. nitida have blossomed. Bamboo only flowers once; it is then at the end of its life. And believe me when I tell you that the flowers are less than appealing, rather looking like decrepit half-starved waifs of wheat. We have new generation of Blue Fountain Bamboo plants grown from collected seed which came from our own plants and from Professor Jonathan Lehrer of Farmingdale State College on Long Island. All of these are divisions from young plants so we do not know of possible height variables, culm coloration or other potential variations of ornamental interest which may develop. We do know this, however: you will have in your possession a plant or plants that will live for at least 60 years and possibly up to 95, a ripe old age, indeed! Foliage on Blue Fountain Bamboo is matte-finished. There's very real elegance in all the bamboos - clumpling or otherwise. In the north spring planting is strongly recommended. (In a sidebar it’s interesting to note that there may be self-pollination issues with F. nitida. Some of the seed which came from isolated specimens from both Lee Mays and Jonathan Lehrer was fallow, refusing to germinate; only seed from simultaneously blooming plants in close association with other flowering individuals produced viable seed. Does anyone know with certainty? If so, talk to us!). These will in all likelihood grow 10 to 12 and up to 15 feet tall but there may be some outliers that grow even taller but possibly shorter, too - it's a Brave New World! Clumping. Division.

Genus Overview: Fargesia

Fargesia is a genus of honest-to-goodness clumping bamboos. They are elegant in breezes, beautiful as specimens and can make a soft, plush refined hedge or screen. Evergreen in milder climates they lose their foliage here in USDA zone 5b. Though they do unfurl some leaves during mild spells in winter – where there were bare stems suddenly there are green blades as if having arrived by magic, surprising and heart warming, pointing in the direction of things to come. Some morning sun is tolerated, dappled conditions are excellent, but protection from afternoon sun is advised for most. Fertile, draining soils that are neutral to modestly acid on the Ph scale are fundamental. Organic mulches of chopped leaves or wood chips are a definite benefit. Planting Fargesia near asphalt or cement walkways or roads may or may not be an issue but best to err on the side of caution. The running bamboos can and will become a problem when planted adjacent to tar, cement, stone work or rubber EPDM liners holding water in a man-made pool. All of the following offerings are divisions of our stock plants.
