Drimiopsis maculata 'Variegata' (ex: Jonathan Lehrer; tentatively identified, this genus is taxonomically confused) – This is the very rare variegated form of Giant Squill or African Hosta. And though you may think these expensive if you look on line for the few sources from which you may locate it these are by comparison a bargain with multiple bulbs per pot. The thick-textured green foliage is blade-shaped, broadly fluted, spotted with brownish purple dots and irregularly streaked in creamy yellow to white. Late April into May brings purplish stems to 1’ tall topped with clustered buds very reminiscent of Grape Hyacinths. The buds open to off-white bells, very showy when the bulbs multiply and the colony grows larger. Up north we grow it in pots kept on the dry side in winter in our cool greenhouse. And though we are uncertain from where this beautiful variegated form has arrived the species is from South Africa. Slow spread. This is a pricey collector bulb: if purchased in autumn where it can be planted outdoors it would be wise to hold indoors until spring. Multiple potted bulbs.
