Corylus maximus 'Purpureus'

Purple Giant Filbert

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Corylus maxima 'Purpureus' – The Purple Giant Filbert is a large imposing shrub with deep purple foliage on the very dark red end of the color spectrum. Leaves remind us of large, rounded Witchhazel foliage to which this unusual shrub is related. I remember seeing it for the first time at Wavehill in the Bronx where I was fascinated and smitten. The Purple Giant Filbert is not all that common in the trade though it has been apparently long cultivated. As with most purple-leaved woody plants the cast becomes increasingly infused with bronze-green as the season progresses.; however, in the north the purple shading will remain longer than in the heat of the south. Plant it as a member in a large shrub border, screening, or as backdrop to shorter shrubs. Cutting grown.
