Cornus florida 'Purple Glory'
Flowering Dogwood
Plant Type:
TREESCornus florida 'Purple Glory' - This is a hard-to-find smaller growing selection with red-pink spring flowers. The foliage emerges with a distinct bronze-purple color and gradually matures to green to green-bronze-purple. Autumn foliage color in deep red-bronze-purple shades occurs with bright red fruits adored by birds. Bark becomes increasingly mottled and flecked as the tree ages... 'Purple Glory' will take a long time to develop this aspect of interest. As Joan Kipling was credited with saying, "Live as if you are going to die tomorrow. Garden as if you are going to live forever." This dwarf-growing selection with typical domed outline is not easy from cuttings. Our plants are cutting grown and not grafted. It is not an easy selection from cuttings and is painfully slow to size up. These factors lend to its paucity on our site. Foliage is on close inspection is warped though from the distance this curiosity is not evident. If you want 'Purple Glory' nab it right away when it becomes available. This laudable species hales from the Eastern United States though this selection probably arose from seedling selection... does anyone know? Established pot grown trees from cuttings.

Genus Overview: Cornus
Cornus. The Dogwoods come in many sizes – low growing shrubs to rounded trees. They are indispensable in a garden with almost all species and cultivars sporting four seasons of interest. Many exhibit richly-colored winter wood, attractive flowers and pretty berries in blue or white. Most offer terrific fall foliage color. The cultivars that offer gorgeous winter bark are especially well-used as background to lower growing evergeens or as foreground shrubs set before conifers, their stem colors glowing in winter against a backdrop of green, black-green, yellow or blue. All that produce flowers and fruit are very fine choices for the wildlife enthusiast. The trees provide nesting spots. When shrubs are grouped together these also provide nesting opportunities for some species of sparrows and even catbirds among others. The trees and shrubs provide nectar for bees and many other pollinators when in flower. Birds relish the late season fruits. All prefer fertile soils that retain some moisture between rain events. All of our offerings are cutting grown.
