Fremont's Leather Flower

Plant Type:

ARID LAND PLANTS

Clematis fremontii – is one of the “bush clematis” from the U. S. Plains, specifically from Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. C. fremontii stands about 1’ to 1.5’ tall at the center of the mound composed of grayish green leaves. Striking heavy-textured waxy flowers are reminiscent of C. pitcheri dangling resplendently in tones from light to dark purple with four recurved white lips at the flower opening. It is possible that some of these seedlings will produce white or nearly all-white flowers. There is sometimes some recurrent bloom as the growing season progresses. Flowers are followed by typical furry seed heads held just above the mound in an olive-green shade – also very attractive and adding to the seasonal interest of this underused clematis. Some of these are at flowering size. This is a species that should be used more. Site C. fremontii in full sun planted in well-drained soil amended with lime. Seed grown.
