Callicarpa dichotoma 'Splashy'
Purple Beautyberry
Plant Type:
DECIDUOUS SHRUBSCallicarpa dichotoma ‘Splashy’ – All foliage is irregularly streaked and splashed with creamy yellow and as the leaves mature fades to creamy white. Typical lavender pink flowers bloom in the leaf axils in summer are followed by small purple fruits. This selection may not grow as tall as its solid green-leaved brethren. It might also be slightly less hardy; therefore, it is recommended until more information comes to light that larger shrubs be planted in the north and only early in the growing season so they have a chance to establish before cold comes. ‘Splashy’ in full to mostly sunny exposures planted in any modest to rich garden soil. Cutting grown. Purple Beautyberry will certainly grow larger than the 4 feet by 4 feet designation if not pruned annually. Whereas C. dichotoma, the green-leafed species, is not a problem when planted in autumn we strongly recommend spring planting only of this variegated form for our northern customers.
