Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet'

Virginia Sweetspire

Plant Type:

DECIDUOUS SHRUBS

Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet' - The Virginia Sweetspire. In early summer showy, fragrant white flowers are like bottle brushes 3 to 6 inches long; these display in drooping racemes. Green foliage turns rich reds and scarlets in autumn. The autumn leaves remain on the shrub often persisting until December. The shrub is semi-evergreen towards the southern end of its range. Winter stems are a mix of dark, earthy red and green to olive-green. Itea is a magnet for all manner of pollinating insects, bees and butterflies. 'Henry's Garnet' will colonize albeit slowly. Fertile ground, constantly moist to even wet condition are best though 'Henry's Garnet' will be tolerant of occasional dry. Full to part sun exposure. Nice, trouble-free and easy. 'Henry's Garnet' is a fine selection of a species whose nativity is New Jersey west to Illinois, south to Texas and all states within to the Atlantic coast. Established pot, cutting grown.
